10 Things You Don’t know About India

You probably know by now that Deshpee and the companies within our group are based in India. And while you’re probably familiar with some of the things that are associated with India (especially if you’ve read our blog post about what India is most famous for), there are likely some lesser known facts that you weren’t aware of. Here are just ten things you may not have known!

1. India was the birthplace of calculus and trigonometry.

Calculus and trigonometry originated in India, dating as far back as 1200 BCE.

2. In terms of population, India has the most English-speaking residents after the USA.

While the USA is home to 251,388,301 people who speak English, India is second with 125,226,449 English speaking Indian citizens.

3. Something most of us use on a daily basis – the USB – was developed by an Indian computer architect.

The USB was developed by Ajay V Bhatt, an Indian-American computer architect who also created the Accelerated Graphics Port.

4. Buttons are also an Indian invention.

Buttons – another item many of will use at least once on any given day – are another widespread item that was invented in India.

5. India has contributed the most troops to the United Nations Peacekeeping Missions.

Indian troops have taken part in more Peacekeeping Missions than any others around the world, saving many lives in the process.

6. Over half of India’s population is under the age of 25.

Over half of the population of India is under the age of 25, with around two thirds being under 35, making it a very ‘young’ country, with up and coming talent and leaders continuing Indian traditions as well as starting their own.

7. Diamonds were only found in India until 1986.

Up until the year 1986, diamonds had not been found anywhere but India.

8. India produces more movies than anywhere else in the word.

India has the biggest movie industry in the world, which includes Bollywood and Kollywood among others.

9. In India, dolphins must be treated the same way we treat humans.

Dolphins are very intelligent animals and are recognised as such in India, where the Government actually declared that dolphins must be treated as we’d treat another human. Keeping dolphins captive is also banned.

10. India is home to the world’s highest cricket pitch.

India is known for its cricket culture, but what you may not know is that the country is home to the world’s highest cricket pitch – at 2444 metres above sea level.
