The Top 5 Social Networking Sites in India

India has one of the fastest growing internet populations in the world, which also accounts for a rise in the popularity of social media. But which social media networking sites are the most popular across the nation? Take a look at these to find out.

5. Twitter

Twitter usage is rising in India, with around 23 million current active users – a number that’s expected to grow to almost 35 million by 2019. Users enjoy Twitter for keeping in touch with friends using short form messages and tweets, following their favourite celebrities and staying up to date with their favourite brands.

Businesses use Twitter to promote their products and services to users through simple updates, images and links.

4. LinkedIn

India has over 37 million users on LinkedIn, with many people using the site to progress in their careers. Although job searchers can use it to make connections, promote themselves and find work, it can also be used by businesses to create a professional online presence in their industry, publish content that establishes them as an industry authority and connect with other professionals, brands and influencers who may be of value to them.

It’s also a way to be open with your audience and allow LinkedIn users to see a simple description of what your company does, what it stands for and how it’s run.

3. Instagram

As of October 2016, Instagram has over 60 million users in India. Visual content is a key part of today’s digital world – especially when it comes to marketing. Users will appreciate being able to see what you’re offering and will be more likely to be swayed by cool photos and graphics.

2. WhatsApp

In November 2016, What’s App announced that over 160 million users in India were using the app every month. Although not technically a site, the cross-platform messaging app is an easy way to stay in touch with others in your social network and can even be used by businesses to provide a quick and simple customer service.

1. Facebook

A 2016 report showed that Facebook has approximately 195.16 million users in India, making it Facebook’s largest user base by country – even ahead of Facebook’s native US, which only has 191.3 million users. Whether it’s for personal use or business, Facebook is the go-to social network for most people around the world and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Unsurprisingly, these are same social networks that have found success in other parts of the world too, proving just how big they’ve really become. Despite being big worldwide, it’s still interesting to look at how popular these sites are in India and how they resonate with Indian users. It also gives marketers an insight into which ones they should be using to connect with their Indian demographic.

Do you use any of these sites? More specifically, do you use them to represent your brand? If so, which ones? We’d love to know more, so tell us your favourites in the comments section below.
